Components of a commercial fire alarm system
Commercial fire alarm systems are a crucial safety component for any business, from small retail locations to large industrial complexes. They help detect and alert people about fire outbreaks, allowing for timely evacuation and fire control measures. Here’s a general overview of the common components used in commercial fire alarm systems:
Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP)
This is the central hub of the fire alarm system. It receives information from various detectors and then processes this information to decide how to respond. The control panel can activate visual and audio alarms, send alerts to a central monitoring station, and even activate fire suppression systems in some cases.
Smoke Detectors
These devices detect smoke particles in the air. There are two main types: ionisation detectors, which are better at detecting fast-flaming fires, and photoelectric detectors, which are better at detecting slow, smoky fires.
Heat Detectors
Heat detectors are designed to respond when the temperature in a room reaches a predetermined level or rises rapidly. These devices are commonly used in areas where smoke detectors may give false alarms, such as kitchens or industrial areas with lots of dust or steam.
Manual Devices
These are devices that allow individuals to manually activate the fire alarm system. They are usually located near exits and other strategic locations.
Alarm Notification Appliances
These devices alert people when a fire is detected. They can be audible, such as bells, horns, or voice evacuation messages; visible, such as strobe lights; or both.
Sprinkler Systems
While not part of the fire alarm system per se, sprinkler systems are often integrated with the fire alarm. When a certain temperature is reached, the sprinkler system will activate, releasing water to help suppress the fire. The fire alarm system often includes flow switches that detect when water is flowing in the sprinkler system, indicating that the sprinklers have been activated.
Fire Alarm Annunciator Panel
This is a remote interface to the fire alarm control panel. It provides a visual indication of which detectors or zones have been activated.
Emergency Communication Systems (ECS) and Mass Notification Systems (MNS)
These systems provide real-time information to all building occupants or personnel in the immediate vicinity of a building during emergency situations.
Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Although not required in all commercial buildings, these detectors are important in places where carbon monoxide buildup could occur, such as buildings with attached garages or industrial facilities.
Fire Doors and Door Holders
Fire doors are designed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke between different sections of a building. Door holders are devices that can keep these doors open under normal circumstances but will release the doors to close when the fire alarm system is activated.
Central Monitoring
Many commercial fire alarm systems are connected to a central monitoring service. If the system is activated, the service will contact the local fire department and the building’s management.
Backup Power Supply
In case of power failure, a backup power supply, such as a battery or generator, ensures the alarm system continues to operate.
